Gourd Bird House
Gourd Bird House
This is the first Gourd Bird House I have offered in my store!
I have been growing them for years at River’s Edge Farm and using some of them as bird houses in my own garden and other’s have been available in The Rabbit Hole, my tiny on-site shop by my home.
The bird that loves this bird house in particular are House or Carolina Wrens. The entrance hole is 1” in diameter, exactly to their liking.
Hang the birdhouse out of the sun but not in deep shade either. A tree near the house but away from a busy area, would be perfect. Wrens are very territorial and if you happen to get too close to their nest, they will scold you!
The gourds are grown over the previous summer, and spend the winter drying indoors.
This gourd bird house is 100% natural, has not been sprayed with any pesticides and has not been treated with a coat of clear varnish.
You can add a coat of varnish to the outside, which will assure that the bird house will last more than one season.
Gourd bird houses should be brought indoors in the early fall, once the wrens have fledged. Shake the nesting materials out before bringing the bird house indoors.
The gourd bird house was grown at River’s Edge Farm, a climate resilient, carbon neutral, zero waste, pollinator supporting regenerative organic mini farm in the Hudson Valley, in upstate New York. More information available on its page on Instagram
