The rocks in this puzzle are basalt, red jasper, quartz, citrine, diorite, shale, pyrite and schist.
Basalt forms when lava rapidly cools.
Shale is a fine-grained, clastic sedimentary rock formed from mud that is a mix of flakes of clay minerals and tiny fragments of other minerals, especially quartz and calcite.
Jasper is an opaque microcrystalline quartz. Its smooth surface and high polish makes it a preferred rock for a gemstone.
Schist are metamorphic rocks, usually formed from shale or mudstone. Schist can host gem-quality crystals including garnets, emeralds, sapphires, and rubies.
Quartz has an array of uses ranging from items as abrasive as sandpaper to those as delicate as glass. It is the second most abundant mineral on earth. One of the strongest minerals in nature, only sapphire, diamond, and topaz surpass it.
Pyrite is often labeled as “fool’s gold” for its metallic luster and bright yellow shade.
Diorite rocks has a contrasting mix of black and white mineral grains. Diorite accepts a bright polish and can be attractive as a gemstone.
Citrine is a semiprecious gemstone that is a transparent variety of quartz with a yellow to brownish color.
